BMW E36 Front Crank Seal (M42/M44)

This is the front crankshaft seal for the BMW E36 (3.16i, 3.18i, 3.18is) models equipped with M40, M42, M43, and M44 coded 4-cylinder engines, manufactured by ELRING (Das Original). It is made of FPM (Viton) material to completely eliminate oil leaks from the front of the engine (behind the pulley). It is of the same quality as the product used in BMW factory assembly.

  • High Heat Resistance: Thanks to the FPM (Fluoro-Rubber) material, it maintains its flexibility for many years without hardening against the engine's high RPM and heat.
  • OEM Manufacturer: Elring is one of BMW's main suppliers for gaskets and seals. It is made in Germany.
  • Perfect Fit: With an inner diameter of 44mm, an outer diameter of 60mm, and a height of 10mm, it fits perfectly into its groove.

Is it the same as the rear seal? **NO.** The rear crank seal (on the transmission side) is much larger. This product is only the small seal on the front side of the engine (on the timing cover).
What should be considered during installation? It is very important to install it without damaging the lip of the seal and without displacing the spring. Applying a small amount of engine oil to the sealing lip before installation prevents dry friction and burning during the initial startup.
