I hear a noise from the trunk, is my shock absorber blown or is the mount torn? In E36s, the "clunk" or metal hitting sound comes from a torn mount 90% of the time. If you bend down behind the rear wheel and look at the upper point where the shock absorber connects to the tower, or if you lift the trunk carpet, you can see if the mount is torn.
